Zone Hardiness Map
The USDA Plant Hardiness map indicates Average Annual Minimum Temperatures within 10 degree F zones. Plant hardiness zones should be used only as a starting point in determining which plants can be grown on your property. Omaha is considered zone 5a, but even in Omaha, there are "microclimates" that may be zone 6 because of protection from existing, mature trees. Low temperatures are only one of many factors determining plant hardiness. Wind, moisture, soil type and exposure to direct sunlight also effect what plants will survive not only the winters, but the summers. Nebraska, as an example, will get as cold as central Illinois or Ohio, but will typically have drier winters with more sun and harsher winds. Many evergreen plants that do well in "Big 10" country struggle here on the plains. Use the zone information to narrow your options then let us at Mulhall's tell you our experience with your choices.
